The screen is the all-pervasive medium and tool of our present age. We might regard the fact that we absorb vast amounts of digitised, audiovisual information almost exclusively through this medium as a utopia come true.

In the early 2000s, Katharina Roters and József Szolnoki began to explore, in their research-based works, the often contradictory patterns of individual and collective memory – and, within that, the process of forgetting.

Pilar Pedraza (Lima, 1965) studied photography and fine art. In 2016, she obtained a Master’s degree in Latin American Contemporary Photography (MALDEFOCO) and also graduated in Community Cultural Management from the Antonio Ruiz de Montoya University in Lima.

The opening exhibition in Veszprém, marking the 200th anniversary of the invention of photography, presents an unusual selection of black-and-white photographs by Árpád Kiss-Kuntler, who was awarded the Photojournalist’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2026.

The exhibition’s abstract yet vivid images invite the viewer on a dreamlike journey to the boundary between reality and imagination. Light, image and presence create the reality we perceive; but where does reality end and imagination begin?

Once again this year, the House of the Arts Veszprém is joining the ‘Cultural Centres Day and Night’ programme series with a varied programme of events.

Some images do not end where they appear to disappear. They continue to live behind the eye, in perception and memory; they remain with us as afterglows, vibrations, faint traces. This year’s theme of LOOP, Afterimage, relates to this lingering visual experience. Viewed from the perspective of photography’s 200-year history, it evokes a phenomenon that belongs simultaneously to light, time, and the gaze: the moment when the image is no longer present, yet continues to exert an effect, returning and transforming.

On 19–20 September, the Dubniczay Palace in Veszprém invites visitors to a two-day series of guided tours as part of the Days of Cultural Heritage. On Saturday, zoologist Dr Zoltán Korsós will guide visitors through the OKINAWA MI AMOR / My Okinawa exhibition, presenting a photographic record of three years spent in the Ryukyu Islands. On Sunday, László Kóródy, curator of the collection, will take visitors on a tour of the Tegularium, exploring how Ottoman expansion following the Battle of Mohács transformed architecture and brickmaking practices in the Carpathian Basin. All programmes are free of charge.

The official season-opening weekend of the Photo200 programme in Veszprém The French Ministry of Culture has included the programmes of the House of Arts Veszprém in its official bicentenary season of events, which celebrates the art of photography. On the first weekend of September, we will have the opportunity to explore various branches of photography: on Saturday, we’ll kick things off with vintage-style traveling photographers, followed by the opening of Árpád Kiss-Kuntler’s photography exhibition, whilst on Sunday, the weekend concludes with the opening of Pilar Pedraza’s exhibition Q’ONOY: The Night of Fire.

Károly Klimó is one of the most consistent continuers the tradition of the Hungarian neo-avant-garde and the European School.

In this exhibition, Gábor Gáspár captures the fleeting gestures of contemporary dance and the subtle nuances of human presence. Taken between 2020 and 2025 during performances at the Veszprém International Contemporary Dance Festival, the photographs are both personal observations and sensitive documents of their time

On the last Saturday of August, the KYŌSŌ festival, based on a fusion of Japanese and Hungarian culture, will be held for the second time. A joint event organised by the Japan Centre Veszprém and House of Arts Veszprém, the festival was born from the meeting of respect for tradition and contemporary cultural and artistic values. The programme showcases authentic collaborations rooted in Japanese–Hungarian cultural relations.

The final “piece” in Attila Zámbó’s series of works made from PET bottles is Sonokalf. Whereas almost all of the earlier works were figurative compositions, the last is non-representational, open-ended, and free in its associations and interpretations.

Due to the exceptional weather conditions and the current energy situation, the opening hours of the galleries operated by the House of Arts Veszprém have been temporarily changed. The exhibition spaces will be closed from 5 to 7 August 2026.

The Veszprém Spring Exhibition is a visual and applied arts exhibition series that has been held for decades and is recognized nationwide. Its important mission is not only to present artists connected to the city of Veszprém, but also to welcome exhibitors from Veszprém County and the Veszprém–Balaton region.

A new perspective is taken by the BotanicArt – Oasis series in exploring gastronomic culture; this time, we present flavors and taste experiences from the silver screen. In the new series, through international feature films, we explore gastronomic phenomena, unique ingredients, and culinary traditions. The inspiration drawn from these films is also applied in everyday life.

LÁSZLÓ SZILÁGYI / LACKÓ (1966 – 2007) A retrospective exhibition of works by the painter, who had ties to both the city of Veszprém and the punk movement, was organized by the House of Arts at the Csikász Gallery.

Our galleries are open to visitors during the X-mas holidays: Csikász Gallery, f|x|r gallery, Dubniczay Palace exhibition spaces, and the Tegularium brick collection, as well as the reopened Modern Art Gallery – László Vass Collection.

As Advent approaches, the House of Arts is once again placing the focus on natural simplicity, creativity, and sustainability. On four consecutive Wednesdays, we welcome visitors to workshop sessions that help rethink holiday preparations—whether it’s decorating, gift-giving, or planning the festive menu. As part of the “Fragrance Advent” series, our programs held in the Igloo on Kossuth Street also highlight sustainability and creativity.

The exhibition space is a place for stress relief and tranquility, where we can escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and enjoy both mental and spiritual refreshment. The House of Arts Veszprém has launched a new series of events aimed at promoting mental health. Focusing on contemporary art culture, it is open to all guests who are interested in learning about the world of literature and fine arts.

With the motto “It’s in Season!” and the subtitle “Museum and Fashion,” the nationwide series of events of the Autumn Festival of Museums—celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2025—will take place between September 29 and November 9, 2025. Our institution will also join the festival with more than 20 program elements.

The *Mirror – Face to Face* exhibition series, now being held for the eleventh time, has become a renowned and respected international event in the field of contemporary graphic art.

Between September 22 and 28, 2025 we will be welcoming visitors for an entire week with diverse and meaningful programs, joining hundreds of cultural centers and community houses across the country as part of the Community Centers Day and Night festival.

Our institution's participative space for environmental awareness, BotanicArt, located on the ground floor of Dubniczay Palace, is a refreshing alternative for visitors who prefer a museum experience. Our OÁZIS project will continue in September, running weekly on Wednesdays from 5 pm to 7 pm.

On 20 and 21 September, the European Heritage Days return once again. This year, we are also joining the initiative with the opening of the FOTOTAXIS 3. – Techno/Topia photo exhibition at the Csikász Gallery and the guided tour “Do we Preserve the Bricks, or do the Bricks Preserve us?” at the Tegularium. All our programmes will be free of charge.

New deadline 17 September 2025 LOOP SQUARE - open call LOOP SQUARE 20 Seconds that Last Forever We are seeking unique, 20-second looped moving images to be showcased in an immersive, four-walled projection space. This space itself functions as a loop—enveloping viewers in 360 degrees—while the content seamlessly loops back into itself, creating a double-loop experience.

On the last Saturday of August, the Japanese Centre and the House of Arts Veszprém are inviting visitors to a one-day mini festival based on the fusion of Japanese and Hungarian culture.

Our institution’s BotanicArt space, located on the ground floor of the Dubniczay Palace, is a participatory environment promoting environmental awareness—a refreshing alternative for visitors who choose the museum experience during the summer heat. Our latest project, OASIS, takes place during the construction break at the Veszprém Castle, and welcomes visitors weekly from July 16 to August 27, every Wednesday from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

At the temporary exhibition "The Colours of Japan", we explore the natural and cultural heritage of Honshū—the largest island of Japan—through European eyes, accompanied by a photojournalist and an art historian.

Our international contemporary jewellery exhibition series was launched in 2023, when Veszprém was the European Capital of Culture. That year, in collaboration with Galerie Bíro, the exhibition "Delight!" was held, welcoming Europe and European artists to our city.

Márton Fernezelyi and Zoltán Szegedy-Maszák have been creating media art installations together for over a quarter of a century, often involving other co-creators in their work.
