Dr Zoltán Korsós, zoologist and former Director General of the Hungarian Natural History Museum, spent three years in the subtropical island chain of southern Japan between 2009 and 2012, at the invitation of Ryukyu University in Okinawa. He visited 53 of the 60 inhabited islands, where he studied the biology of soil-dwelling arthropods. He first shared his unique experiences on his blog and later in a book based on the blog. This much-needed publication offers readers an insight into this distant, largely unknown world, introducing them to the local people, isolated and distinctive cultures, and the exotic and rare wildlife of the region. From the 50,000 photographs he took during his time there, around fifty were selected for a photographic exhibition offering a glimpse into the Ryukyu Islands. The exhibition is presented with the support of the Hungarian Natural History Museum.
This project has been awarded the Bicentennial of Photography label by the French Ministry of Culture and is part of the official programme of the Bicentennial from September 1, 2026 to September 30, 2027.
