“Micro-stories, which are closed in on themselves, are reinterpreted as elements of the grand narrative. A window opens through which we can cast a cautious glance at the patterns of collective historical amnesia taking shape on the battlefield between the individual’s ideas and the will of ideology.”
Katharina Roters and József Szolnoki began collaborating in the early 2000s to examine, in their research-based works, the often contradictory patterns of individual and collective memory – and, within that, of forgetting. The 2016 ‘Hack the Past!’ —which featured elements of re-enactment and public art interventions—and was further developed for the 2019 ‘Wunderblock’ exhibition at MODEM in Debrecen. This exhibition, created to mark the seventieth anniversary of the 1956 Revolution and War of Independence, forms the concluding part of that series.
The project has been designated as part of the ‘Bicentenary of Photography’ by the French Ministry of Culture and forms part of the official programme for the Bicentenary, running from 1 September 2026 to 30 September 2027.
The exhibition was opened by: Zsolt Miklósvölgyi, art writer and curator
