In June 2026, the Csikász Gallery will host Rayformations, a major solo exhibition by László Zsolt Bordos. More than a landmark event in the Hungarian art of light, the exhibition also reconnects the city of Veszprém with international conversations in light and media art, reaffirming its role as a regional cultural centre.
THE ARTISTIC VISION
The art of László Zsolt Bordos extends far beyond projection, lighting technology, or the conventional toolkit of installation art. For Bordos, light is an autonomous sculptural material through which the invisible takes form and the visible dissolves. In his works, light is not merely a medium but a carrier of philosophical meaning, illuminating the uncertain boundaries between matter and spirit, body and space, reality and illusion. The exhibition presents works that have attracted considerable international attention over recent decades—installations that elevate the immaterial nature of light to new interpretative horizons.
Bordos’s artistic practice explores the relationship between light and shadow, with particular attention to how this interaction transforms our perception of space and our sensory experience. His early video-mapping projects were pioneering in their impact, while his later works further deepened the sculptural interpretation of spatiality and light.
Umbra Triplicata (2015) is among Bordos’s most significant works and was acquired in 2018 for the permanent collection of the ZKM | Centre for Art and Media in Karlsruhe. This represents a notable professional distinction in itself, as ZKM is widely recognised as one of the world’s leading institutions dedicated to media art. Umbra Triplicata may also be understood as an optical and physical experiment: it condenses the geometric projections of two different shadows into a single installation, creating a unique visualisation of the relationships between bodies and light. The work conveys a profound philosophical reflection on the layered nature of visibility and the significance of shadow as a metaphor for existence. At once engaging with the philosophies of light, matter and shadow, Umbra Triplicata raises the question of what truly exists and what is merely a projection arising from the limitations of human perception and understanding.
