The story of MAMŰ began 35 years ago in Târgu Mures/Marosvásárhely.
The Târgu Mures Workshop (MAMŰ - the name was given by the writer and philosopher Vilmos Ágoston) was of decisive importance in the artistic community of the city at the time, which was searching for alternative means of expression. Between 1978 and 1983/84 the members of this grouping were engaged in a lively intellectual and progressive artistic activity through their actions, their interventions in nature and their attempts to renew traditional artistic genres.
A large number of artists associated with the group left Romania in the 1980s. Several of the relocated artists can be found among the founding members of the art society "MA(születő) MŰ(vek) - MAMŰ"( Works Born Today), founded in 1991 in Budaörs, as well as artists and theoreticians born in Hungary. The 22-year anniversary of the re-launch can be interpreted as a continuation of the history of MAMŰ (identity of name, continuity of spirit and occasional continuity of person), but also as the beginning of a new chapter. The Association has been and continues to be a platform where the emphasis is on supporting contemporary artistic endeavours, preserving the diversity of artistic expression, opening up to the world of other arts, and developing and fostering international artistic dialogue. In the years since its founding in Budaörs the Society has gradually grown in size, with an important membership including expatriate artists, those born in Hungary, visual artists from Western Europe and beyond, art writers and those working in experimental fields of music.
The occasion for Time-dependencies is the 35th anniversary of MAMŰ. The travelling exhibition with nearly 70 exhibiting artists will present a broader cross-section of the diversity of artistic practices that meet at MAMŰ. The key concepts of the predefined concept - time and dependency(ies) - refer to the commemorative-analytical-evaluative character of the anniversaries and their linking in the title served as the exhibition's call-words. The material of the exhibition is made up of impressions of individual approaches that reflect this thematic framework. Thus, in addition to reflections on the past (personal/collective experiences, events), the present and works that can be interpreted as visions of the future, the material also includes specific manifestations of processes in time, themes of the perception of space and time, and concepts of time, dependence and relationship. These interpretations can be seen in the subject matter, in the formal solutions and in the way and process of creating the work.
