"...I replaced the pots in an attic with transparent pots, which defined the spiders' web-weaving sites. I then lowered fishing lines between the beams to a depth of one metre, which the spiders pulled up. The weight of the lifted ropes ensured the tension of the nets, which also served as an environmental support...."
In his works of a biological nature he is interested in the structure of the environment and the behaviour of the organism or group of organisms that interact with it. During these works he often collaborates with Dr. Csaba Szinetár, arachnologist at the Department of Zoology in Szombathely, who assists the artist with his scientific experience.
Imre Farkas was born in Balatonalmádi, he currently lives in Szombathely. He graduated from the painting department of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, where his teachers were György Szabados and Péter Kiss. Since 2012 he has been studying for a doctorate at the University of Pécs, where his supervisors are sculptor Colin Foster and art historian Tamás Aknai.
In his opening speech art historian Tamás Aknai said that one of the directions of art is to find the creation of artworks in cooperation with nature. He added that this is not new citing Giotto as an example, who studied natural phenomena to create his works. In works related to natural phenomena, sensual contact and mystery play an important role, he stressed. The exhibition reflects Imre Farkas's particular programme with a series of formal phenomena that are irrationally dissected through the use of tools, he said. He said the artist's most important questions are what is beyond the visible, the very small and the minimal light. In his minimalised visual world silky grids, nets and fractals share space with spiders. The exhibition also documents how arthropods live in natural and artificial environments, the art historian added.
