Bernar Venet's art can be seen at the Modern Art Gallery - László Vass Collection and in the public spaces of Veszprém and Budapest from mid-July to the end of October. The artist's name is synonymous with his gigantic steel sculptures most of which are made in Nyársapat conquering the world from our country.
Hungarian audiences have had the opportunity to see Venet's works at the Kunsthalle Budapest on several occasions, first in the group exhibition Metal Signals (1999) and then in the exhibition New York - Versailles - Budapest (2012), where they were given a comprehensive overview of Bernar Venet's work. The extensive oeuvre is a curious combination of bizarre artistic solutions, consistent intellectual work and a restless spirit of discovery. The iconic curves, straight or irregular lines and angles are the result of a relentless curiosity that led the young artist to pursue mathematics and the natural sciences as early as the 1960s. A rare collection of these early drawings will also be on display in the MetaMetria exhibition.
In addition to the drawings the exhibition will also include a special focus on models. These small-scale, finely crafted works have the same intelligence and integrity as their larger counterparts, but with a particular visual intimacy that makes them easier to appreciate. Yet of all the works these experimental miniatures are the closest to the artist's world of ideas.
During the exhibition four public artworks will be displayed in the historical squares of Veszprém as a kind of museum space expansion experiment and a Classical Arcs installation will be on display in the heart of Budapest, on Március 15 Square.
MetaMetria, the title of the exhibition is an enigma that conveys the inner tension that characterises Venet's art, which is nothing less than a highly self-reflective and critical artistic attitude that constantly pushes the boundaries of the world he creates. It is outside this system that the artist usually pauses for a moment and from there he moves on to new ideas that mock the previous ones. The apparent contradiction is resolved in a more than 50-year artistic career and seen from the outside these elements form a coherent whole, a career that evokes a sense of completeness, seeking answers to questions of existence that concern space, time and perception through the experimental use of photography, sound, painting and performance.
