Veszprém Artists' Guild

The Veszprém Artists' Guild was founded in 1989 in the house of sculptor Béla Raffay in Salföld: the first independent organisation and art society in the country established by its own efforts during the regime change. It was and still is the first and largest NGO in the county even in 2019. The founders - Júlia Bokros, László Bokros, Júlia Csüllög, István Felhősi, László Hegyeshalmi, Lajos Horváth, György Tisza Kalmár, Dalma Korényi, Éva Král, Miklós Olasz, Béla Raffay, Győző Somogyi, János Vásárhelyi - had the goal and the determination to unite the artists of Veszprém County in an association and to operate it as a friendly society in addition to the artistic bond. The principles formulated by painter Győző Somogyi were as follows: "No matter what school, membership or awards you have. All that matters is that you work and that you consider creating as a profession regardless of what you do for a living. The judgement of each life's work is left to the future and God. ... We have not formed an elite group but a professional and friendly society based on territorial principles."

Under the leadership of the successive guild masters (Béla Raffay, Győző Somogyi, László Horváth, László Lugossy, László Bokros, Tibor Kádár, Lajos Veszeli, Edit Kapros Kósa, Endre Kovács), the association enriched the artistic life of Veszprém and its surroundings with numerous joint exhibitions, events and publications. Photographer Endre Kovács led the association for seven years, enriching the work of the Guild with new, young members and innovative programmes such as the mini exhibitions of the Vitrin Gallery and the Miniature Exhibitions. Lajos Veszeli has undertaken the many tasks of Guild Master for two terms. He excelled in organising large-scale events that seemed almost impossible. (Exhibition at the Underground Power Station in Balatonfűzfő, artists' picnics in Paloznak).

After 30 years since its foundation many of our members are no longer with us. What remains the same: high professionalism; love of crafts and materials; the importance of the rural way of life; diversity of genres, themes and styles; artist-friendship; respect for each other. These values still characterise the life of the group today. The jubilee exhibition is a good opportunity to answer the questions posed by Ágnes Kulcsár, painter and current guild master: can the Veszprém Artists' Guild renew itself from time to time, enrich itself with modern forms of presentation, new talents and fresh approaches alongside its traditions?

In three exhibition spaces: the Csikász Gallery, the Castle Gallery and the Magtár more than a hundred works of art help to answer these questions.
