The artist explores the concept of the medium. The question of how to conceive of the central grey space of the painting and its edges, or rather its edges as both bearer and borne, is one of the most cardinal questions that arises much earlier, in the cycles of the 1990s, but becomes one of the most difficult in his later works on canvas.
