"So this is my will..." the legacy of István Dubniczay - documentary exhibition

With this documentary exhibition, which was realized in cooperation with the Antal Reguly Museum in Zirc, we commemorated the 250th anniversary of the death of the canon and patron. The knowledge material on the tables is the result of research by historian Beáta Németh-Vida, the tables were made by Ferenc Navratil. The exhibited objects and relics were brought to us by the Cistercian Abbey of Zirc, the Cistercian Historical Library of the National Széchenyi Library (OSZK) and the Collection of the Archdiocese of Blessed Gizella.

The name of Canon István Dubniczay is not unknown in Veszprém County and in Veszprém, but only a few moments of his life are known. His youth is obscure, although the dates of birth of his brothers and sisters are known. Research is made more difficult by the fact that at the beginning of the 18th century we can meet a total of five István Dubniczay students at the Jesuit grammar school in Trenčín, where his brother Sándor, a canon of Veszprém, also studied. We have managed to identify all of them, but even so we only know that "our" István Dubniczay was born sometime around 1710, probably in Trencsénteplice.

The various monastic orders were important in István Dubniczay's life. He continued his studies with the Jesuits in Trenčín, worked with the Palatines in Pápa, lived with the Piarists when he arrived in Veszprém, and found the much sought-after peace among the Cistercian monks in Zirc. The canon was a generous donor to these monastic orders.

But the work of István Dubniczay, living in the bondage of the secular church should not be forgotten. The house he built in Veszprém - now home to the House of Arts/László Károly Collection and temporary exhibitions - was completed in 1751.

During his canonate he was actively involved in recatolization, the fight against Protestants and the defence of the estates of the chapter. His manuscript work Series Episcoporum Wesprimiensium, which is on display in the exhibition is of great importance from the point of view of church history.
