Csikász Gallery
The exhibition in the Csikász Gallery presents a special selection of the nearly 400 Szilvásy Nándor Szilvásy bequest pieces in the collection of the House of Arts Veszprém.

The placard art bequest was purchased in 2015 by the House of Arts Veszprém for its collection with the support of the National Cultural Fund. From the late 1950s onwards works produced using the latest digital techniques include film and circus posters, political and commercial posters, as well as posters for art exhibitions. The exhibition is a tribute to Nándor Szilvásy, who was born 90 years ago.

Nándor Szilvásy

(Makó, 13 November 1927 - Révfülöp, 6 July 2011)

artist, graphic artist

He graduated from the Csanád Vezér High School in Makó in 1946. From 1947 he studied at the Hungarian College of Applied Arts and from 1949 at the Hungarian College of Fine Arts, where he studied graphic art. From 1952 to 1958 he illustrated children's books and magazines (Élet és Irodalom/Life and Literature, Budapester Rundschau). From 1959 he worked in the field of poster art, and from then on he was a leading figure in this branch of art. In addition to his graphic work, he has always maintained an interest in drawing and painting. In 1990 he moved to Révfülöp and turned his attention fully to painting. Since 2000 he had been the art director of the New Horizon magazine. Between 2004 and 2011 he was a member of the Hungarian Poster Society. In 2007 he was elected honorary citizen of Révfülöp.

"The skill of artistic compression, the appropriate choice and the witty solution of the optical effect achieved with plane and spatial elements" characterised his placard art. His compositions reveal strong colours, vivid effects and a varied use of techniques. He uses photographs, drawings, caricatures, montages and sequences. The curiosity of his work is its humour, irony and surrealistic visual world. Since the 1960s he has also created film posters, which are distinguished by their concise and often grotesque expression. In 1975 for a placard exhibition he created the visual world that won him an international award: the combination of the letters P and L in the shape of a screaming head and a leg. In the 1970s he redesigned the logo of the Budapest International Fair, which is still used today.

He himself said of this placard:

"The idea is important, but let's sneak in some art in case the client doesn't notice. It's important to avoid the latest fashion, because it gets lost in the crowd of similar placards. It also doesn't hurt to shout in the street."
