Mária Lugossy's career began in the mid-1970s with her work in the field of jewellery: after graduating from the Hungarian College of Applied Arts, she started her career by designing and making clocks - and clock sculptures for the interiors of public buildings - and jewellery. As she moved away from the art of jewellery, steel, copper, glass and plexiglas became important materials for Mária Lugossy, who used them to create autonomous sculptural compositions that created their own aura of plasticity with their shiny surfaces, precise workmanship and reduced forms, which were reduced to geometric elements and solids.
In the rapidly developing glass sculpture of Mária Lugossy, the mentoring spirit of Zoltán Bohus is clearly visible: in just a few years, she has burst into the forefront of the international studio glass movement with her groundbreaking innovations in the use of materials and processing, and thanks to this, she has been invited to teach at international glass art workshops and symposia.
Glass became the most important material of her works, which she combined with different materials, such as bronze and various metals, to create sculptures. The initial geometric-constructivist language was gradually replaced by a series of compositions based on motifs evoking the organic world, which later included human figures and body remains, which became increasingly prominent from the 1990s onwards. In addition to small sculptures, from the early period of her career she turned to small sculptures and installations for the exhibition space, and her competition-winning works have led to the realisation of several monumental public works with a memorial function, including works in Székesfehérvár, Veszprém, Tata and Budapest.
The retrospective exhibition of Mária Lugossy is jointly organized by the Bohus-Lugossy Foundation and the House of Arts Veszprém in the Castle Gallery of Dubniczay Palace, with the aim of introducing the residents of our town to the unique and globally significant career of Mária Lugossy, who has been awarded numerous national and international prizes by the professional community.
