The world-famous violinist and music teacher Lipót Auer (1845-1930) was born in Veszprém. His significant artistic achievements were first honoured by the House of Arts in the form of a book of the Veszprém Castle Street 17 Quarterly Series 1995/1. It was a major project to bring the musician back into the public consciousness. The book was a real spark since the day of its appearance two memorial plaques commemorate Lipót Auer in Veszprém, the international Auer Festival Veszprém regularly recalls the violin pedagogue and world-famous musicians visit his hometown.

The first part of this publication contains the Hungarian translation of Auer's autobiography, My Long Life in Music. The second part of our book is a collection of writings by Miklós Rakos, a well-known researcher of the history of Hungarian violin playing. The articles include studies on Dávid Ridley-Kohne and Ignác Ruzitska, as these famous violinists from Veszprém can be considered 'Auer's father' and 'Auer's grandfather' in the musical sense. The book also includes studies on the most famous Auer students, articles from the Hungarian press of the time and a summary by Grigoriev, a violin professor in Moscow, entitled 'The Influence of the Auer School in Russia' (1979). We hope that our publication will also contribute to the fact that Lipót Auer can finally take the place in Hungarian musical public consciousness that he deserves.
